Video over IP has become one of the hottest topics in our industry. It represents a sea change approach for transporting content from site to site, within a studio and over the air.

The transition to IP-based production and distribution, from the proven and well-understood world of SDI, will be challenging. Here are a few thoughts on how those challenges may impact future protocol standards, workflows, and UHD live production.

Radio broadcasters of today are very aware of the changing media landscape. Radio listening time is decreasing, especially among younger listeners who prefer consuming radio using multimedia devices such as mobile phones, tablets or computers to traditional radio sets. According to respected radio futurologist James Cridland  (www.radioiloveit.com), young listeners still tune in to radio, but for a shorter and shorter period of time. The challenge is thus to keep radio relevant for young listeners in a multimedia platform world.

The migration to IP is top-of-mind for many broadcast operations, but so far the focus is mostly on identifying a single standard for video transmission over Ethernet connections. At ChyronHego, we believe that the IP migration is about much more than replacing a cable; it requires a completely integrated, end-to-end, software-based approach that leverages standard IT equipment and infrastructure.
